Playwright Jeremy O. Scott defends Rihanna for texting him … during a performance of his play
Turns out she’s no rude girl.
Rihanna was slammed by some Broadway fans for texting during a preview for hot new show “Slave Play” this week. But the playwright, Jeremy O. Harris, is defending the pop star — and has revealed she was texting him.
“You guys want to know what she texted during the play?” Harris said during a Q&A on Wednesday after a special performance. “Cuz I saw white people writing, ‘Why was Rihanna texting during Jeremy’s play?’ … You guys will not drag my queen for being nice to me.”
Harris even read the texts that Rihanna — whose music is a prominent part of the show — sent to him during Saturday’s performance. “She texted me at 8:51 p.m., ‘wtffffffffffffff?’ And then at 8:57, she said, ‘Oh my God, you’re epic.’ And then I responded, literally crying, ‘How dare you?’ And then at 10:24, she said, ‘Am I looking at an actual d - - k right now?’ ” (That was in reference to a full-frontal scene in the show.)
Harris later said, “I was literally back there in the mezzanine, and there were multiple times I would hear Rihanna — and only Rihanna — laughing. And I wept, just knowing that Rihanna thought my play was funny.” A witness told Page Six of Rihanna at the show: “During the intermission-less play, she was seen laughing hysterically and texting on her phone.”
Harris addressed the Rihanna controversy after a special “blackout” performance Wednesday for artists, writers and activists who identify as black. The crowd included Keke Palmer, Adrienne Warren, Norm Lewis, and Jesse Williams with girlfriend Taylour Paige.
Harris also took a shot at the upcoming Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker show “Plaza Suite,” after The Post wrote that that play could be an easier sell with audiences. Harris fired back in the Q&A: “I was like, imagine what [my audience] … would think of ‘Plaza Suite,’ which is a [1968] Neil Simon comedy … I would imagine it would be a lot of moments [in] an audience where all the white people were laughing at something and I’d be like, ‘I totally missed it,’ ” he said.
